Johnny Depp’S Modi Brings 1916 Paris To Life With Al Pacino & Riccardo Scamarcio

In a masterful new direction, Johnny Depp brings to life the turbulent story of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani in Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. Starring Riccardo Scamarcio as Modigliani and Al Pacino as art collector Maurice Gangnat, the film is based on Dennis McIntyre’s play and is set in the streets and smoky bars of war-ravaged Paris in 1916—a pivotal period in the art world.

The newly released trailer transports audiences to this evocative setting, capturing Modigliani as he battles with both the police and his own inner chaos. Depp’s direction captures a whirlwind of emotions as Modigliani tries to flee Paris, his career, and his turbulent reputation, only to find himself confronted by a collector with the potential to alter his destiny.

Johnny Depp, 61, describes his role as director as a “profoundly fulfilling experience” and credits the cast and crew for their dedication and artistry. “This project has been transformative for me,” he shared, adding a heartfelt nod to his close friend and collaborator, Al Pacino, who had encouraged him to direct the film. “How could I refuse Pacino?” Depp remarked. “Al’s talent and dedication brought a depth to this story that I’m immensely grateful for.”

Pacino, 84, equally cherished the collaboration, describing Depp as “wild and wonderful” and noting the playful camaraderie they shared on set. “Working with Johnny, it’s just us—a couple of toddlers,” Pacino quipped, hinting at the adventurous spirit Depp brings to the project.

The film, co-written by Jerzy Kromolowski, Mary Olson-Kromolowski, and McIntyre, is produced by Depp’s IN.2 Film. Premiering at both the San Sebastián and Rome Film Festivals, Modi also features Antonia Desplat, Ryan McParland, Bruno Gouery, Luisa Ranieri, and Stephen Graham in supporting roles. The movie is set to hit theaters in 2025, offering a glimpse into the soul of an artist whose passion was both his fuel and his undoing.

Depp recently reflected on his connection to Modigliani’s story, drawing a parallel to his own personal trials. “We’ve all been through something,” he shared, “but not all of our lives turn into a soap opera for the world to see.” As he redefines himself behind the camera, Depp’s Modi promises to be a riveting and insightful portrayal of artistry, resilience, and redemption.
