At Town & Country’s 11th Annual Philanthropy Summit on October 29, 2024, Michael spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about the emotional journey he experienced while watching Isabella document her treatment on YouTube. “It was inspiring, but tough,” he shared. “I was witnessing her struggle firsthand, and it was hard to see her share such personal details with the world.” Isabella’s candid vlogs, chronicling each step of her treatment, resonated with many, and her bravery left a lasting impression on her father.
Reflecting on Isabella’s strength, Michael remarked, “If you take your pain and make it a message, you can help other people get through their pain.” He expressed immense pride in her ability to turn her challenging experience into a source of hope for others. “She’s just been a phenomenal young adult,” he added, clearly moved by her journey.
Isabella’s cancer diagnosis was announced during a Good Morning America segment in January, a moment that shocked the family. The diagnosis came after a routine check-up revealed a mass in her cerebellum. Just days before her 19th birthday, she underwent emergency surgery at Cedars-Sinai to remove the tumor. “To hear the words, ‘cancer-free,’ is an indescribable relief,” Michael said, though he admitted that the anxiety still lingers. “I still get nervous. Every day, I’m on pins and needles,” he confessed.
Yet, amid the worries, there is a sense of relief and progress. Isabella, now a student at the University of Southern California, has embraced her college life. “She loves being around her friends and going to class,” Michael beamed. The experience has transformed her perspective, giving her a deeper appreciation for life. “It’s given her a different outlook, especially as a young adult,” he reflected.
At the event, Michael candidly admitted that revisiting Isabella’s vlogs is emotionally challenging. “Looking back at her journey would just crush me even more,” he told the audience, illustrating the weight of their shared experience.
