Jaden Smith is opening up about his unique behavior and how it has shaped his identity over the years. In a candid post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, October 19, the 26-year-old alt-rapper explained that his unconventional actions were never a deliberate attempt to stand out but rather a misguided effort to blend in.
“All the weird s*** you’ve ever seen me do was me thinking I was totally normal,” Smith wrote. “So now sometimes I try to act weird on purpose so y’all think it’s on purpose. But at the end of the day, I’ve been trying to fit in this whole time, and I guess it’s not exactly going to plan.”
His comments came just one day after he participated in an interview with Complex titled “I Interview Jaden Smith and It Was Somehow Even Weirder Than Expected.” During the conversation, Smith answered various questions with quotes from the Twilight series, further emphasizing his unconventional approach.
When asked why he embraces his “weird” persona, Smith reflected on his past desire to be perceived as “normal.” “It was a really big deal for me for a long time that people thought I was normal,” he shared. “After a while, that bothered me. I started to feel like people didn’t really understand me or see me.”
He also expressed frustration with societal pressures that push individuals to conform. “It’s so frustrating to watch people try to follow the ‘normal’ thing to do when that’s not what they really want to do in their art,” he said. “So I actively try to be myself.”
Smith recently released his new EP, 2024: A Case Study of the Long Term Effects of Young Love, which he collaborated on with his therapist. The EP debuted on Friday, October 18, showcasing his growth and self-reflection as an artist.
