During a rally in Pennsylvania on October 19, former President Donald Trump made headlines for his unconventional tribute to golf legend Arnold Palmer, which included a suggestive anecdote that raised eyebrows.
Speaking at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, Trump praised Palmer as “one of the greatest golfers in the world” and dedicated approximately 12 minutes of his speech to reminiscing about the late athlete. However, the address took a surprising turn when Trump alluded to Palmer’s anatomy, stating, “But Arnold Palmer was all man…when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said, ‘Oh my God. That’s unbelievable.’”
Trump, 78, insisted that his comment was made “with all due respect to women,” but his remarks elicited mixed reactions from the audience. “We have women that are highly sophisticated here, but they used to look at Arnold as a man,” he added, further commenting on Palmer’s unique presence in the golfing world.
Palmer, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 87, was described by Trump as someone who could “electrify” a crowd. The former president expressed that if Palmer were present at the rally, the audience would have clamored for him to take the stage instead of Trump himself.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Palmer’s daughter, Peg Palmer Wears, acknowledged that she was not upset but deemed the comments a “poor choice of approaches” to honoring her father’s memory. She noted that both Trump and Palmer shared a passion for golf and that her father had a belief in the Republican Party.
“There’s nothing much to say. I’m not really upset,” Wears stated, adding, “I think it was a poor choice of approaches to remembering my father, but what are you going to do?”
Reflecting on her father’s sentiments, Wears recalled an incident in which Palmer expressed disdain for Trump during a television appearance. “He couldn’t believe the arrogance and crudeness of this man,” she recalled, highlighting her father’s belief in decency.
At the rally, Trump also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, referring to her as a “s— vice president,” as he continued to lay the groundwork for his campaign ahead of the November 5 election.
As both Trump and Harris embark on their respective campaign trails, the event served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of political discourse and the lasting legacy of public figures like Arnold Palmer.
