Despite the intense drama of House of the Dragon, there’s no shortage of laughter behind the scenes, thanks to one particularly funny cast member.
During a New York Comic Con panel on October 20, actors Matt Smith, Fabien Frankel, and Tom Glynn-Carney revealed that Rhys Ifans, who plays Otto Hightower, is the costar most likely to lose track of what’s going on or break character, resulting in comic chaos on set.
“Rhys knows his character inside and out, but when it comes to the day-to-day, he’ll just be like, ‘No idea what’s going on today,'” said Frankel, 30, about the 57-year-old actor.
Smith, 41, added, “He’s the funniest man on the planet ever.” Frankel jokingly agreed, stating, “It’s unbearable to work with him. Every day is an uphill battle to keep things professional.”
The cast also poked fun at how difficult it is to get through scenes with Ifans. Frankel even imagined the HBO team’s frustration, quipping, “I can feel HBO behind the monitor going, ‘Jesus f—ing Christ, Rhys.'”
Ifans’ character, Otto Hightower, plays a pivotal role in the House of the Dragon storyline. Showrunner Ryan Condal teased fans in an interview with Variety that Otto’s arc is far from over, despite his character appearing imprisoned at the end of season 2.
“We’re thrilled to have Rhys reenter the story, and I’ll just say, Otto Hightower’s tale is not done yet,” Condal shared.
The hit Game of Thrones prequel premiered in August 2022, with its second season debuting in June 2024. Season 3 is set to resume production in 2025, with the series expected to wrap up after four seasons.
House of the Dragon is currently available to stream on Max.
