Ke Huy Quan made a surprise virtual appearance during a panel featuring his former Goonies co-star Josh Brolin at New York Comic Con on October 17, asking a couple of fun questions about their time filming the beloved ’80s classic.
As Brolin discussed his career in front of an audience at the Javits Center, a video from Quan played on the screen, prompting Brolin to smile. Quan, known for his recent role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, posed two questions: “What was your favorite memory from making The Goonies?” and, more pointedly, “Who is your favorite Goonie?”
The surprise continued when Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk in the film, joined the video call, adding to the excitement in the crowd. “You know what’s actually a great question,” Cohen quipped, playfully pressing Brolin to reveal his favorite Goonie. “No one cares about your favorite memory, by the way, but who is your favorite Goonie? We’d all like to know,” he joked, gesturing toward himself and Quan.
In response, Brolin reminisced about filming the movie, particularly a moment involving the grand pirate ship “Inferno,” which was built to scale for the production. “I wrote a book that comes out in November, and it’s in the book,” he began, referring to his upcoming memoir From Under The Truck. He shared how the cast was kept from seeing the ship during its construction until they were lined up and instructed to close their eyes before filming.
When they finally saw the ship, Brolin’s reaction was anything but subdued. “I went underwater. I hear this muffled, kind of, ‘Okay, guys. Ready and … action,’” he recalled. “We went up, and I said, ‘F—!’” His exclamation drew laughter from the audience, and Brolin recalled the director’s surprise: “Dick Donner went, ‘What?’ I’m sorry! Holy s—, man, look at that thing.”
Brolin playfully referred to all his former castmates as “my favorites,” but gave a special nod to Quan, celebrating his recent Oscar win.
Cohen, who has transitioned from acting to practicing law, revealed that he has maintained close ties with his former castmates, especially Quan, whom he represented during contract negotiations for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan humorously recalled how unexpected it was to negotiate with producers as “Chunk and Data” from The Goonies.
In a previous podcast appearance, Quan expressed his nostalgia for The Goonies, describing it as a dream-like experience: “One day, we’re walking on the pirate ship, the next day, we’re going down a water slide,” he said, reflecting on the joy of being part of such a memorable film.
