Julie Bowen, known for her role as Virginia Venit in the classic golf comedy Happy Gilmore, revealed that her children have only just experienced the film for the first time—nearly three decades after its original release. With a sequel set to begin filming soon, Bowen shared this amusing detail during her appearance on the October 17, 2024, episode of The Sherri Shepherd Show.
Bowen, 54, explained that her three sons—Oliver, 17, and twins John and Gustave, 15—had never seen her in any of her film roles. “They had heard I’m in lingerie with two pitchers of beer—which is true, but it’s not like sexy; it’s more funny, it’s kind of silly,” she said.
Her sons grew curious about the original film as they looked forward to the upcoming sequel, influenced by their friends’ enthusiasm. “Just last night, one of them watched it,” Bowen excitedly told Shepherd, noting that she had yet to receive a review of the film from her son. “His friend sent it to me on Snapchat,” she added.
Although Bowen did not reveal her son’s reaction, she humorously noted that his friend didn’t recognize her in the film. “He made [my son] watch it and he loved it, but he did say to me, ‘Who are you in it?’” she recalled, playfully trying to recreate her character’s appearance.
Bowen confirmed she will reprise her role in Happy Gilmore 2, stating that Virginia and Happy remain a couple. Christopher McDonald, who played the rival golfer Shooter McGavin, is also returning for the sequel. New cast members include Bad Bunny and Travis Kelce, although specific plot details are still under wraps. Margaret Qualley, who previously had no golfing experience, is also set to appear.
While filming dates approach, Nick Swardson, another returning cast member, mentioned that a final script has not yet been completed. “It’s the most Sandler thing ever,” he commented on the production process.
As for Henry Winkler, who has collaborated with Adam Sandler on various projects, his involvement in the sequel remains uncertain. Winkler recently recounted a time when Sandler called him for a last-minute favor, humorously adding that he was compensated with just “a cookie” for his efforts.
