Grace Van Patten, star of Tell Me Lies, is still reeling from the explosive season 2 finale that left fans with plenty of unanswered questions and shocking twists. In the Hulu series, Van Patten portrays Lucy Albright, a college sophomore entangled in a web of complicated relationships and betrayals. And after the Oct. 16 finale, her character finds herself at the center of even more chaos.
Reflecting on the climactic episode, Van Patten expressed her admiration for how the finale not only wrapped up the season’s drama but also set up new cliffhangers. “So much happens up until [the finale],” she told PEOPLE. “I was wondering, ‘How do they top the rest of the season and also sum everything up?’ And they really did.”
The finale unfolds with the revelation of Lucy’s freshman year fling with Evan (Branden Cook), now exposed on the day of Evan and Bree’s (Cat Missal) wedding. As if that wasn’t enough, Lucy rekindles her toxic relationship with Stephen (Jackson White), only to have her new flame, Leo (Thomas Doherty), violently confront him after learning of their past together.
“They opened up another can of worms with that last scene,” Van Patten said of the wedding-day upheaval. The episode takes another twist when Stephen, who’s been holding onto a recording of Evan admitting his affair with Lucy for nearly eight years, decides to send the recording to Bree just before her walk down the aisle.
“I think it’s really going to make people wonder, ‘Where is this going to go?’” Van Patten said, calling the final reveal “so genius” for its timing amid the season’s many shocking moments.
The finale also hints at more unresolved storylines, including the future of Lucy’s former best friend Lydia (Natalee Linez), now engaged to Stephen in a 2015 flash-forward. “There’s a little bit of connection between them,” Van Patten noted, suggesting that Lydia’s loyalty to Lucy may now be in question.
With season 2 leaving so many unanswered questions, fans are eagerly awaiting what may come next for Lucy and her tumultuous group of friends.
