Austin Stowell Embraces His Role as Young Gibbs in NCIS

Austin Stowell is navigating the world of television with commitment and passion, declaring himself “in a relationship with a TV show” rather than pursuing romantic connections. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the actor, who stars as a younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the new CBS series NCIS: Origins, revealed that his focus is entirely on the procedural drama premiering Monday, October 14.

“I’m here Monday through Friday… Those 300 people on set are all my boyfriends and girlfriends,” Stowell joked, underscoring the camaraderie he shares with the cast and crew.

While Stowell is currently single, he emphasizes that kindness is a non-negotiable trait for any future partner. “The way someone treats others on the street can tell you a lot about them,” he noted, hinting at the importance of character in his personal life.

NCIS: Origins serves as a spinoff of the long-running NCIS, focusing on a young Gibbs at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office, under the mentorship of the legendary Mike Franks, portrayed by Kyle Schmid. The cast also includes Diany Rodriguez, Mariel Molino, Tyla Abercrumbie, and Bobby Moynihan. Mark Harmon, who originated the role of Gibbs, is an executive producer and narrator for the series.

Stowell expressed immense pride in stepping into Harmon’s iconic role, referring to it as a “tremendous honor.” He shared that he prepared for the audition by revisiting classic NCIS episodes to capture Gibbs’s unique traits. “I wanted to embody as much of what Mark does, recognizing the innate behaviors of Gibbs and the traits he learns over time,” Stowell explained.

Harmon praised Stowell’s talent and presence, stating he felt an immediate chemistry when the actor auditioned. “I felt the room jump a little when Austin came in, before he said anything,” Harmon remarked. “Someone said, ‘I’ll just say it, that’s a movie star.’”

Stowell appreciates Harmon’s approachable demeanor on set, highlighting his willingness to assist and support the cast. “He always starts conversations with, ‘Do you need anything?’ That is so disarming,” Stowell reflected. “He treats everyone with such respect.”

NCIS: Origins is set to premiere on CBS at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes available for streaming on Paramount+ afterward.
