Shawn Mendes recently shared insights on his personal journey and upcoming album during a candid conversation with John Mayer for Interview magazine. The singer, now 25, reflected on his hiatus and the self-discovery that has accompanied his latest project, Shawn, which he described as his most personal work yet.
Mendes expressed that this album has allowed him to feel more like himself than ever before. “It’s already given me more than any of my albums,” he told Mayer, adding that he’s learned to “not take [himself] so seriously” and approach life with a greater sense of humor.
In discussing his emotional evolution, Mendes credited therapy for helping him let go of extreme tendencies and face the challenges of aging with a fresh perspective. “If someone asked why I feel generally better these days, I’d probably first answer therapy, and secondly, just taking myself less seriously,” he explained.
Mayer, 46, encouraged Mendes to view his experiences as part of the natural progression of growing older, assuring him that self-discovery is a journey rather than an endpoint. Reflecting on his past relationships and emotional sensitivity, Mendes acknowledged that the highs and lows of his life continue to shape him, noting, “You’re not necessarily a moving target when it comes to figuring yourself out.”
Mendes’ new album represents a significant step in his personal and artistic development, and he’s excited to share this version of himself with the world.
