In a nostalgic episode of the How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast, former child actor Scott Curtis reminisced about sharing a memorable first kiss with Candace Cameron Bure during his guest appearance on Full House. Curtis, who portrayed D.J. Tanner’s first boyfriend, Kevin Gwin, recalled the moment as both thrilling and nerve-wracking.
The significant kiss took place in the 1990 episode “13 Candles,” marking not only a pivotal moment for the characters but also for Bure herself, as it was her first kiss on-screen. During the podcast, Andrea Barber asked Curtis if it was his first kiss in real life. He humorously replied, “I may have had one kiss before, but we’ll say it was. It was close enough to be.”
Curtis detailed the excitement leading up to the iconic moment, explaining how he was well aware of the significance of the role. “I was excited to get the audition,” he shared. “They had said that I was gonna be Candace’s first kiss, so when I did the table read, I took this seriously.”
He described how he and Bure broke the ice by using Binaca breath freshener on each other, feeling the anticipation build as the filming day approached. The kiss was filmed twice—once with an audience to capture their enthusiastic reactions, and once without.
After the initial filming, Curtis and Bure developed a friendship, sharing laughter and phone conversations. However, during the show’s wrap party, he found himself starstruck when he saw Bure. “I choked,” he admitted. “I literally froze and could not go over there to say hi to her.” He attributed this moment to the character’s shy nature, humorously acknowledging that it was unexpected given they had already shared a kiss on-screen.
Curtis noted that Bure has expressed some embarrassment over having her first kiss aired on television. During a recent Full House reunion panel, she invited her co-stars to discuss their awkward early kisses, acknowledging the challenges of such a public milestone. Barber empathized, stating, “Would you like your first kiss to be seen by 200 strangers and your mom and dad? No! That was mortifying!”
Barber and Jodie Sweetin, who co-host the podcast, assured Curtis that Bure has fond memories of him, with Barber suggesting that the embarrassment stems more from the public nature of the experience rather than any negativity toward Curtis himself.
