In a heartfelt discussion, LeBron and Savannah James shared their emotions regarding their son Bronny’s cardiac arrest, which occurred in July 2023. The couple’s candid reflections were featured in Netflix’s new docuseries, Starting 5, marking the first time they have publicly addressed the incident.
Savannah, 38, expressed gratitude for the outcome, stating, “At the end of the day, it was just about us supporting each other and just being super grateful for the outcome,” as tears filled her eyes during the series’ premiere.
The docuseries also captures a poignant moment where LeBron, 39, and his mother, Gloria James, visit the University of Southern California. They meet with Erin, a member of the university’s medical staff who was instrumental in saving Bronny’s life when he collapsed during basketball practice. LeBron acknowledged Erin’s crucial role, calling her a “lifesaver, literally,” and credited the entire coaching and training staff for their swift actions.
“Erin performed CPR on Bronny when he went down,” LeBron recounted to his mother, emphasizing that the school’s medical team was pivotal in ensuring Bronny’s survival. “They’re the reason Bronny is alive now and smiling and thriving and doing what any 19-year-old should be doing—living out their dream.”
In August, Bronny was diagnosed with a significant congenital heart defect, leading to successful surgery and ongoing rehabilitation. LeBron revealed that following the scare, Bronny’s primary concern was returning to the basketball court. “It’s crazy with kids; when they love something, that’s all that matters to them,” LeBron explained. “In his mind, he’s like, ‘Can I or can I not play ball again?'”
LeBron expressed pride in Bronny’s resilience and passion for basketball, noting, “Bronny’s the first person in the family to go to college.” He highlighted the importance of witnessing his son’s growth into a young man, adding, “You’re like, wow, it could have been so much worse for our family.”
The father-son duo recently made history during the Lakers’ preseason game against the Phoenix Suns on October 6, becoming the first father and son to play together in the NBA. Bronny was drafted as the 55th overall pick after a season at USC.
LeBron reflected on the significance of sharing the court with his son, stating, “There’s no greater accomplishment that will be able to overtake me being on the same floor as my son,” during an interview on the Today show.
