Bobby Brown Honors Late Mother-in-Law Cissy Houston: ‘May She Rest in Peace and Power’

Bobby Brown has publicly expressed his condolences following the death of Cissy Houston, who passed away on October 7 at the age of 91. Houston, the legendary gospel singer and mother of Whitney Houston, had been under hospice care in New Jersey for Alzheimer’s disease.

In an exclusive statement shared with PEOPLE, Brown, 55, and his wife, Alicia Etheredge-Brown, conveyed their heartfelt sentiments: “Sending love and blessings to the Houston family on this great loss. May she rest in Peace and Power. The Browns.”

Cissy Houston’s relationship with her daughter Whitney Houston was marked by both love and turmoil. Bobby and Whitney first met in 1989 and married in July 1992. During their 14-year marriage, they welcomed their daughter, Bobbi Kristina. However, both battled addiction and marital challenges, which ultimately strained their relationship. The couple divorced in April 2007.

Cissy Houston had long been a protective figure regarding Whitney, famously expressing her disappointment over a 20/20 interview in 2016, where Bobby discussed his life with Whitney. She stated, “I am deeply disappointed that this interview to promote the story of Bobby’s life seemed to be more of an exposé on Whitney’s life.”

Cissy Houston’s passing was confirmed by her daughter-in-law, Pat Houston, who shared the news in a poignant statement. “Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We lost the matriarch of our family,” she said. “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives—a woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts.”

Pat Houston added, “Her contributions to popular music and culture are unparalleled. We are blessed and grateful that God allowed her to spend so many years with us, and we are thankful for all the many valuable life lessons that she taught us. May she rest in peace, alongside her daughter, Whitney, granddaughter Bobbi Kristina, and other cherished family members.”
