Charli XCX‘s remix album, Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat, drops on October 11
Charli XCX has found a powerful collaborator in Ariana Grande for the remix of her track “Sympathy Is a Knife,” and the singer-songwriter is eager to share the evolution behind this new version. In an exclusive clip from her interview with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe, Charli reflects on how her perspectives have shifted since the original track’s creation.
“I was writing the original record when I was in a very different position than I am now, post-release of Brat while working on the remix album,” Charli, 32, explains. This transformation in her personal and professional life has influenced the remix’s meaning.
Following the success of Brat, Charli has experienced increased public scrutiny, noting, “I’m definitely finding more than ever that my words are being picked apart, taken out of context. I offend a lot more people by doing exactly the same things.” She acknowledges the challenges faced by major artists, stating, “It’s hard to be constantly scrutinized for things that you have said…you just can’t defend yourself without opening a whole other can of worms.”
This newfound understanding prompted Charli to invite Grande, 31, to contribute to the remix. “I had heard that Ari wanted to do something and I was like, this is somebody who definitely knows this feeling more so than me,” she says. “We’re so lucky and blessed to be in the situation that we are in — all artists who are able to make music at the level that they’re making it and financially support themselves from creating art.”
The full interview with Zane Lowe will be available on Tuesday, October 8, at 1 p.m. ET on Apple Music.
Charli is currently on her Sweat Tour alongside Troye Sivan and recently revealed the full tracklist for her upcoming remix album on Instagram. The album features an impressive lineup, including Robyn, Yung Lean, Billie Eilish, and Lorde, among others.
Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat will be available on October 11, with promotional billboards highlighting its guest artists in vibrant Brat font against a lime green backdrop. Charli previously released music videos for her remixes of “Guess” with Eilish and “Talk Talk” with Sivan, alongside tracks like “Von Dutch” featuring Addison Rae and A.G. Cook, and “Girl, So Confusing” with Lorde.
