Jussie Smollett is making a comeback with his latest directorial effort, The Lost Holliday, which premiered in select theaters on September 27. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the 42-year-old actor shared how crucial the support from friends and family has been for him, especially following the controversy surrounding his alleged 2019 hate crime hoax.
Smollett stars in the film as Jason, a single father to his adopted daughter following the tragic death of his partner, Damien, portrayed by Jabari Redd. His aunt, Vivica A. Fox, plays Cassandra, Damien’s estranged mother who comes to Los Angeles to arrange her son’s funeral. Smollett expressed gratitude for the positive reception of the film, saying, “I don’t take it lightly. The response has been… just wonderful.”
While The Lost Holliday tackles serious themes such as loss and family estrangement, Smollett emphasizes its hopeful message: “It’s about what you do with [what life brings].” He noted the film’s inclusive elements, stating that it speaks to a universal audience through its themes of love and grief.
Despite ongoing legal challenges stemming from his 2022 conviction on five counts of disorderly conduct, Smollett credits his support system for helping him navigate this difficult period. Friends and family, including Taraji P. Henson and his sister Jurnee Smollett, have played vital roles in his life. He described their unwavering support as “fearless,” particularly highlighting Fox’s influence in getting The Lost Holliday made.
“Vivica was fearless in her support… This film would not have gotten made had it not been for Vivica stepping in,” he said. Smollett also praised Henson for her constant encouragement, referring to her as “like my heart.”
Throughout his struggles, Smollett has found solace in the love and support of those around him, stating that their backing has been essential for his healing. “When the world made me feel like I have no value… my support system reminded me that I was loved,” he shared.
Reflecting on his journey over the past six years, Smollett expressed hope and gratitude for his “village,” affirming that they have played a pivotal role in his path toward healing and self-acceptance.
