The track and field community is in mourning following the untimely death of Shelby Daniele, a standout athlete and recent graduate of California Polytechnic State University. The news of her passing was shared by her former teams at both Cal Poly and Buchanan High School through heartfelt tributes on social media on September 26 and 27.
Daniele, who was born in 2001, made a significant impact during her time at Cal Poly, graduating this spring with a master’s degree in agriculture with distinction. Described as an “exceptional student-athlete,” she dedicated five years to the track program and achieved numerous accolades, including being a six-time All-Big West honoree and a two-time Big West champion. She held multiple school records, including the indoor 200 meter at 24.69 seconds and the No. 2 all-time spot for the indoor 60 meter at 7.62 seconds.
In an emotional tribute, her college team reflected on her character, stating, “But more importantly, she was an incredible teammate and leader. Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community.” The tribute included cherished photos of Daniele in action.
Before her collegiate success, Daniele was a prominent runner at Buchanan High School, where she also made a mark by winning the 200 meter individual title at the California State Meet in May 2019. The school’s track team shared their condolences, highlighting her remarkable athleticism and the lasting impact she had on her teammates.
“Shelby was a fantastic athlete, but she will be remembered by her teammates and coaches as an even more amazing person,” the team’s Facebook post read. “This loss leaves a gigantic hole in so many hearts.”
A memorial gathering took place at Buchanan High School’s Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, where friends and family honored Daniele’s memory by lighting her name on the scoreboard. Coach Brian Weaver emphasized her role as a mentor, stating, “She kept them going when times were tough.” He added that Daniele loved life and inspired others to appreciate every moment.
The cause of her death has not been disclosed, but the community continues to express condolences and remember her vibrant spirit.
