NBC’s iconic sketch show Saturday Night Live (SNL) is set to celebrate its landmark 50th season this weekend, with veteran actress Jean Smart making her debut as host.

On September 25, NBC released a promotional clip that emphasizes the significance of this milestone season. The promo opens with a classic monologue by the legendary George Carlin from SNL’s inaugural episode, which aired in October 1975. As Smart, 73, strolls through the famed Studio 8H, viewers are treated to a montage of memorable moments featuring SNL alumni such as Steve Martin, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, and Drew Barrymore.

When Smart arrives on stage, she anticipates the focus to shift to her; however, the promo continues to highlight iconic clips, prompting her to exclaim, “Knock it off already, alright? Geeze, can we make this a little bit more about me?” The humorous interruption continues, cutting her off just as she expresses her excitement about hosting.

Smart’s hosting gig marks a notable moment in her illustrious television career, which began in 1979. The Emmy-winning actress recently took home her sixth Emmy for her role as comedian Deborah Vance in the acclaimed series Hacks. Notably, she has won three consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

The season 50 premiere will also feature country music sensation Jelly Roll as the musical guest. The singer-songwriter, known for his hit “Need a Favor,” is gearing up for the release of his upcoming album, Beautifully Broken, on October 11.

Upcoming episodes include comedian Nate Bargatze and Coldplay on October 5, followed by pop star Ariana Grande with Stevie Nicks on October 12. Michael Keaton and Billie Eilish are slated for the October 19 episode, while comedian John Mulaney and Chappell Roan will take the stage on November 2.

This season will introduce three new cast members: Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline. Additionally, Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker have been promoted to the main cast after two seasons as featured players. Longtime anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost will return to host the popular “Weekend Update” segment.

In a nostalgic twist, former cast member Maya Rudolph will reprise her role as Vice President Kamala Harris during the upcoming presidential campaign, having previously portrayed Harris during the 2020 election cycle.

With Jean Smart at the helm and a mix of beloved returning faces and new talent, SNL’s 50th season promises to be a memorable celebration of comedy and culture.
