Tyla Reflects on Recovery Journey After Back Injury: “Getting Better and Getting Stronger”

South African singer Tyla is making her much-anticipated return to the stage following a back injury that forced her to cancel her 2024 world tour earlier this year. The 22-year-old artist recently spoke with PEOPLE, expressing her excitement about performing at various events to promote her debut album and Grammy-winning hit, “Water.”

“It felt so good. It’s been hard not being able to do all that,” Tyla shared during an interview, highlighting her partnership with Bose to showcase their Ultra Open Earbuds. She added, “The little that I’m able to do now, I’m just doing wholeheartedly until I get 100% better.”

The cancellation of her tour marked a temporary setback in Tyla’s meteoric rise to fame since her debut in 2019. However, this pause has allowed her the opportunity to reflect on her aspirations for future live performances. “I feel like some people don’t realize how I’m still very new to all of this,” she noted. “I’m really enjoying having fun on stage and figuring out what I like, what I want to do, what I don’t want to do. When it comes to my tour, I know it’s just going to be amazing. I look forward to that time.”

Despite the challenges of recovery, Tyla is committed to her physical therapy regimen, understanding the importance of her back in maintaining her performance abilities. “Your back is such an important part of your body, so I just want to take my time,” she explained. “I’m looking forward to just getting better and getting stronger.”

Tyla has also continued to engage with her fans through music and appearances at high-profile events like the Grammys, MTV VMAs, and the Met Gala. “I would literally cry if I had to sit out. This is all so much fun. It’s like a dream,” she said, adding that the experience feels surreal.

Reflecting on her recovery, Tyla considers this period a blessing in disguise. “It’s a moment to just pay attention to myself and slow down,” she said. “I feel like it’s also something that happened because maybe God wants me to slow down, just breathe and take care of myself.”

In addition to her recovery, Tyla has been busy in the studio working on new music. “It’s different,” she teased. “I’ve grown so much this year. I’ve evolved in so many different aspects that this new music is going to be that version of me, the now version of Tyla.”
