Meredith Gaudreau, widow of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, is paying tribute to the deep connection shared between her late husband and his brother, Matthew, who were both tragically killed in a biking accident last month. On September 21, Meredith shared a poignant throwback video from her wedding to Johnny in September 2021, featuring a touching speech by Matthew.
In the clip, Matthew expressed gratitude to the couple’s families for organizing the wedding before reminiscing about his lifelong bond with Johnny. “John and I have been inseparable our whole lives,” he stated, as the footage alternated between his speech and moments of Johnny joyfully watching alongside Meredith. “Any time you saw me, John was right beside. Any time you saw John, I was following along behind him,” Matthew reflected, emphasizing their enduring support for each other even as their hockey careers took them in different directions.
In her heartfelt caption, Meredith addressed Matthew directly, asking him to continue caring for Johnny in the afterlife. “Take care of John for me, Matty 🖤🤍 Love & miss you both,” she wrote, adding, “Give John a big kiss from me 😘😘😘.”
The brothers lost their lives in a tragic incident on August 29, when an alleged drunk driver struck them near their hometown of Salem County, New Jersey, just a day before their sister’s wedding.
Both Meredith and Madeline, Matthew’s widow, have been vocal about their grief following the devastating loss. Notably, both women are expecting; Madeline is pregnant with her first child, while Meredith is anticipating her third baby with Johnny, a revelation she made during the brothers’ memorial service earlier this month.
Meredith also shared a glimpse into her life with their two children, particularly their nearly two-year-old daughter, Noa, who has been struggling with the loss. “She loves watching videos of Daddy before bed, especially her requests for ‘Daddy hockey,’” Meredith wrote, recalling the bond between Noa and her father. She added that Noa shares a freckle with Johnny on her right cheek, a sweet reminder of their connection. “As she approaches turning 2, I have been told their personalities are getting more and more similar ❤️ and I can’t wait for that to continue,” Meredith concluded.
