Jana Kramer is channeling her journey from hardship to hope through her latest single, “Warrior,” which debuted on September 13. The country singer, 40, revealed in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE that the song is a heartfelt tribute to her husband, Alan Russell, 43, and reflects her gratitude for his unwavering support.
“I wanted to write a song to thank him for being such a wonderful man and for coming into my life,” Kramer explained. “He has a tattoo on his arm that says ‘Jana my little warrior,’ and I kept envisioning that title for the song.” Kramer, who tied the knot with Russell on July 13 in Scotland, said the track was inspired by Russell’s response to her past experiences with abusive relationships.
Kramer’s song, co-written with Sara Brice, wife of fellow country artist Lee Brice, symbolizes a new chapter in her life. “Writing this song helped me realize that I’m no longer in crisis mode,” she shared. “I’m now in a place where I can be happy and embrace love, and it’s truly beautiful.”
Kramer, who gave birth to son Roman with Russell in November 2023, also has two children, Jolie, 8, and Jace, 5, from her previous marriage to Mike Caussin. She praised her ex-husband as a “really cool” coparent.
Reflecting on her past, Kramer has previously spoken about her abusive marriage to Michael Gambino, whom she married in 2004. Gambino was later convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to six years in prison. Kramer recalled how Russell’s reaction to her past was markedly different from other men she had encountered. “[Alan] looked at me and said, ‘You’re a warrior,’ which made me feel empowered in a story that had been very broken,” Kramer said.
Following their engagement in May 2023, Kramer and Russell’s summer wedding was infused with Scottish traditions, including bagpipes, kilts, and Highland Games. On their wedding morning, Kramer surprised Russell with her new song, underscoring the deep bond they share.
