Heather Graham Delves into Self-Care and Romance in Trailer for ‘Chosen Family’

Heather Graham is set to explore themes of self-care and love in her upcoming romantic dramedy, Chosen Family. The film, which marks her second directorial effort following 2018’s Half Magic, also features Graham in the lead role.

Chosen Family centers on Ann (Graham), a yoga instructor struggling to manage her chaotic life, including a demanding family and an unsatisfactory dating life. According to the film’s synopsis, Ann is overwhelmed by her tendency to prioritize others’ needs over her own. However, her life takes a turn when a new romantic interest appears, prompting her to question whether she can finally put herself first.

In an exclusive preview of the trailer provided to PEOPLE, Graham, 54, describes Chosen Family as “a labor of love” that was “a long time in the making.” She elaborates, “The film follows a woman who is a people-pleaser, convinced that taking care of everyone else will lead to her own happiness. Eventually, she learns that true fulfillment comes from self-care and surrounding herself with love, often found among friends who become like family.”

The trailer reveals Ann’s budding romance with Steve, played by Fuller House star John Brotherton. Their relationship is tested by the need to win over his young daughter, Lilly (Ella Grace Helton), and navigate tensions with his sister, Clio (Julia Stiles). In a dramatic moment, the trailer features a confrontation between Ann and Clio, culminating in a physical altercation where Clio delivers a punch, only to have the situation resolved with a romantic gesture between Ann and Steve.

The ensemble cast includes Andrea Savage, Michael Gross, Julie Halston, and Thomas Lennon. The film is produced by Graham along with Michael A. Nickles, Anthony Gudas, Chad A. Verdi, Andre Relis, Michelle Verdi, Chad Verdi Jr., and Paul Luba, with co-producers David Gere and Chelsea Vale.

Graham, who wrote and starred in the film, shares her motivation for the project with PEOPLE, stating, “I wanted to create content that showcases women as protagonists and delivers empowering messages. Rather than waiting for opportunities, I aimed to tell a story that resonates with both women and men.”

Chosen Family promises to be a heartfelt exploration of personal growth and the importance of nurturing oneself amidst life’s challenges.
