Gina Rodriguez Envisions Unfinished ‘Love Triangle’ for Cancelled Series ‘Not Dead Yet’

Gina Rodriguez is reflecting on the untapped potential of her recently-canceled ABC series, Not Dead Yet. Despite its early cancellation after just two seasons, Rodriguez remains hopeful about the storyline possibilities that never came to fruition.

In a recent conversation with PEOPLE about her new game show, Lucky 13, Rodriguez expressed her disappointment over the series’ abrupt end and shared her vision for future storylines. “I would’ve loved to see a love triangle involving myself, Rick Glassman, and Lauren Ash’s characters,” Rodriguez, 40, revealed. “I definitely think the Edward-Nell storyline was far from over. It was a love story that truly deserved more development.”

Rodriguez played Nell Serano, an obituary writer who starts seeing ghosts, while Glassman portrayed Edward and Ash played Lexi. The actress also highlighted her interest in further exploring her character’s supernatural abilities, hinting at potential plotlines where Nell could interact with people in the “in-between stages of life and death.”

“There was so much more to delve into,” Rodriguez noted. “I would have loved to see Nell’s abilities evolve, perhaps causing friction in her friendships as she navigates her unique gift.”

Despite her longing for additional episodes, Rodriguez maintains a positive outlook on the show’s cancellation. “I’m genuinely grateful for the experience,” she said. “It’s bittersweet, but I’m happy for the time we had and the family we created so quickly on set.”

Rodriguez formed close relationships with her co-stars, particularly with Hannah Simone and Lauren Ash, who she describes as “my girls for life.” Simone, 44, and Ash, 41, supported Rodriguez through her pregnancy, and Rodriguez has continued to cherish their friendship.

“Rick Glassman and I also bonded deeply. We really understood each other,” she added.

Reflecting on her connection with the show’s premise, Rodriguez shared how it resonated with her personal experience of losing her grandmother. “The idea that those who have passed can return and offer guidance was deeply meaningful to me,” Rodriguez explained. “It was a beautiful concept that aligned with my own experiences of learning from loved ones who are no longer physically present.”

As Not Dead Yet makes way for other projects, Rodriguez remains optimistic about the positive impact and lasting memories from her time on the show.
