Tyla Shuts Down Critics After Asking Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X to Hold MTV VMA Trophy

“Y’all make everything weird,” the South African artist fired back.

South African singer Tyla, 22, has responded to online backlash following a moment at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she appeared to ask stars Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X for help holding her VMA trophy.

Tyla, who has been on the rise since her hit single “Water” took off in 2023, won the award for Best Afrobeat during the event on Wednesday, September 11. The award was presented by The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey, 24, and “Industry Baby” rapper Lil Nas X, 25. However, the moment was marred when some social media users criticized Tyla for seemingly asking the duo to hold her trophy because it was too heavy for her.

“Oh my gosh,” the “Truth or Dare” singer exclaimed as Lil Nas X handed her the coveted Moon Man statue. “You guys know me and holding awards. Yo, I cannot — I’m not strong enough.”

“Please, please,” she continued, holding out the trophy toward the pair. While Lil Nas X hesitated but eventually took it temporarily, Bailey stood smiling but didn’t move.

Following the social media storm, Tyla took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to clarify the situation and shut down the critics.

“Y’all make everything weird… I was not asking my girl Halle… We just girls, STFU I WON A VMAAAA,” she posted, defending herself against claims that she was putting Bailey in an awkward spot.

Tyla’s VMA victory follows her show-stopping performance at the 2024 BET Awards in June, where she performed her hit single “Jump” alongside Gunna and Skillibeng. Her performance embraced her South African heritage, featuring an eye-catching set that included a cage of dancers painted as a giant tiger, a nod to her fanbase known as the “Tygers.”

This year, Tyla has also made significant strides in the fashion world. She made her debut at the prestigious Met Gala in May, where she wowed attendees with a diamond-studded manicure that paired seamlessly with her Balmain gown. The gown, made of sand, was designed to represent an hourglass and symbolized the passage of time.

When asked by PEOPLE if the extravagant nails would make it difficult for her to eat at the event, Tyla responded confidently, “It doesn’t matter. It just looks cute!”

Tyla continues to rise as a global icon, effortlessly merging her music, cultural heritage, and fashion sense. Despite the occasional social media controversy, the young star remains unbothered and focused on her flourishing career.
