Eugenio Franceschini is reflecting on his recent experience joining the cast of Emily in Paris as Lily Collins’ new love interest, Marcello. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the Rome premiere of the show’s fourth season, Franceschini shared his heartfelt appreciation for the role.

Franceschini, who joined the series amid filming other projects in Italy, described his casting as “an unexpected gift.” He admitted that the rapid pace of the opportunity left him momentarily disoriented. “Everything happened very quickly,” he explained. “When I was selected, I was deeply immersed in another TV series in Italy, so I didn’t have the time to fully grasp what was unfolding.”

Despite the whirlwind experience, Franceschini expressed immense joy about his role and the show’s impact. “Looking back, it’s been a great joy,” he said. “I’m excited to see how my character will evolve and how it aligns with the series’ high standards.”

Franceschini’s role as Marcello, who becomes Emily’s (Lily Collins) new romantic interest, led to a close working relationship with Collins. “I spent a lot of time working with Lily, so she has become a close friend,” he revealed. The actor, originally from Verona, Italy, also shared his excitement about filming in Rome. “Seeing the Fontana di Trevi at sunrise, completely empty for us, was an unforgettable experience,” he recalled. “It’s something I will cherish forever.”

As the first part of Season 4 concluded, Emily was left grappling with her feelings for chef Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), ending on a dramatic cliffhanger. The second part of the season shifts to Rome, where Emily’s new adventures with Marcello unfold, including a memorable Vespa ride through the city.

The show’s trailer humorously highlights Emily’s romantic escapades across various European cities. “So now you’ve been with a French guy, a British guy, and now an Italian? You’re really stamping your passport, huh?” Mindy (Ashley Park) teases Emily.

Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulie), Emily’s boss, adds, “It’s not the first time you’ve mixed business with pleasure. You’re actually quite good at it.”

The official synopsis for the season finale reveals that Emily and Gabriel’s chemistry is undeniable as they strive for a Michelin star for his restaurant. However, two significant secrets threaten their dreams, leading Emily to be drawn to a potential new love interest in a new city.

Emily in Paris Season 4, Part 1 is currently streaming on Netflix, with Part 2 set to premiere on September 12.
