In a revealing cover story for PAPER Magazine, Halsey shared that they received a life-altering diagnosis on their 28th birthday. The pop star, who uses she/they pronouns, opened up about learning of their T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder and its profound impact on both their health and creative process.

Halsey, now 29, recounted the moment with PAPER Magazine, explaining how their birthday, once a day of celebration, became marked by the confirmation of their serious health condition. “I had a tiny little baby and I was on my tour when I received the diagnosis,” Halsey revealed. The discovery came as a major blow during a period of personal and professional reflection.

The diagnosis significantly influenced Halsey’s approach to their music, particularly on their upcoming album, The Great Impersonator. “I had to stop asking the universe for inspiration,” they said. “Before this record, I felt like I had everything I could wish for—a perfect family and a thriving career. I struggled to find anything to write about.”

Their creative block, however, was abruptly resolved by the health challenges they faced. “The universe presented me with a new reality to explore,” Halsey noted, reflecting on how their condition became a poignant source of inspiration.

In the interview, Halsey also discussed the harsh reality of their diagnosis and its impact on their career. “Doctors warned me that continuing my career could hinder my healing process,” they said. “It felt unfair because the suggested solution was to quit my job to get better.”

The creation of The Great Impersonator led Halsey to contemplate profound existential questions. “I wondered if in another decade or parallel universe, would I still become Halsey and would I still end up facing these health issues?” they mused.

Halsey concluded their interview by acknowledging the support from their fans while sharing their ongoing health journey. “In 2022, I was diagnosed with Lupus SLE and then with a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder,” they revealed. “Both conditions are currently being managed or in remission, and I will likely carry them for the rest of my life.”

The full interview provides an in-depth look into Halsey’s personal struggles and artistic evolution, offering fans a deeper understanding of the challenges that have shaped their recent work.
