Lizzo Faces Backlash Over Fitness Videos: A Controversial Shift in the Spotlight

by Coco

Lizzo‘s recent foray into fitness, highlighted by her workout videos on Instagram and TikTok, has sparked a wave of reactions online. The Grammy-winning singer, known for her hit song “Truth Hurts,” has received both praise and criticism as she shares her journey toward improved health.

Supporters of Lizzo commend her efforts to enhance her well-being, viewing her fitness regime as a positive step. However, detractors have labeled her move as hypocritical, questioning the authenticity of her previous stance on body positivity. Critics argue that Lizzo’s visible changes undermine her previous messages about self-acceptance regardless of size.

A segment from the popular animated series “South Park,” which aired in May, has intensified the debate. The episode, titled “The End of Obesity,” features a fictional weight-loss drug named “Lizzo,” which is portrayed as a cost-effective alternative to Ozempic. The drug aims to encourage body positivity while addressing weight concerns. Lizzo’s reaction to the episode was initially defiant and proud, expressing that her impact on body image was significant enough to be featured in the long-running show.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Lizzo, 35, discussed her evolving perspective on body positivity. She explained that her understanding has shifted from a broad concept of body positivity to what she now describes as body neutrality. Lizzo acknowledged the fluctuating nature of her body image, stating, “The bottom line is, the way you feel about your body changes every single day.”

While some fans have defended Lizzo, emphasizing that her decision to focus on health deserves recognition, the negative feedback persists. One Twitter user highlighted the inconsistency in mocking Lizzo for her health efforts, comparing it to ridiculing someone in need of employment. Conversely, other comments criticize Lizzo for allegedly contradicting her earlier advocacy for body positivity.

Despite the ongoing debate, Lizzo has chosen to focus on promoting her shapewear brand, Yitty, rather than addressing the controversy surrounding her fitness videos.
