Drake has finally lifted the curtain on the inspiration behind his hit track “Too Good,” featuring Rihanna. The Certified Lover Boy artist revealed that the song, which fans have long speculated about, was actually inspired by tennis superstar Serena Williams.
The revelation came to light as fans eagerly sifted through “100 Gigs,” a website Drake launched that features a treasure trove of his unreleased music and archival clips. Among the clips currently making waves on social media, one video shows the One Dance singer in a candid conversation with his mother, Sandi Graham, in the studio.
During the discussion, Drake disclosed that his 2016 collaboration with Rihanna was rooted in his relationship with Williams. “No, I get heavy on a couple joints, but this is more about me and Serena…I gather!” Drake shared with his mother, shedding new light on the meaning behind the song.
The track’s chorus, “I’m too good to you / I’m way too good to you / You take my love for granted / I just don’t understand it,” hints at the emotional weight behind the lyrics, which Drake now confirms were directed toward Williams.
As the mother-son duo continued their conversation, they paused the music, allowing Drake to elaborate on his creative process. “It’s funny because when I make songs about women, I also make songs for them. So, I know what kind of song to make. If I’m gonna talk about them, I’ll at least do them the justice of making them a song that they’ll like,” Drake explained.
He further added, “I know Serena very well, and I know that she’ll hear it loud and clear, but not hate me for it because it’s lighthearted.”
The rapper also touched on the current state of his relationship with Williams, admitting that he’s unsure if she’s “seeing someone else” now.
