Hunter Schafer Opens Up About ‘Clean Parting’ with Dominic Fike: “It Was So, So Hard”

Euphoria star Hunter Schafer recently shared details about her breakup with Dominic Fike, describing the end of their relationship as a mutually agreed upon and “clean parting,” despite the emotional difficulty of the separation.

In an interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 25-year-old actress and model reflected on her relationship with Fike, 28, which ended in July 2023. Schafer revealed that while their decision to split was mutual, it wasn’t an easy one.

“That breakup was mutually agreed upon,” Schafer explained. “It was one of the cleaner breakups I’ve had. We both recognized that this was not working, and we couldn’t continue. We had to go our separate ways. It was a clean parting, and he has a lot to work on, and I also have a lot to work on.”

Schafer further elaborated that the breakup prompted a period of self-reflection. “I’m in this era of, like, I’ve got to figure my stuff out,” she said. “We had a really good thing, but there were aspects of ourselves that kept interfering with the relationship, and it wasn’t sustainable.”

The actress also addressed rumors that their breakup was messy, following Fike’s comments in an interview last year where he said, “I just decided to be alone for a while.” Schafer dispelled this misconception, emphasizing that their parting, though difficult, was amicable.

“It was so, so hard because we really loved each other,” she shared. “He’s a really special person, and I love his soul and everything.”

Discussing the challenges of dating in the public eye, Schafer, who is a transgender woman, acknowledged the unique pressures that come with fame. She hinted that she might keep her future relationships more private to avoid the constant scrutiny and judgment.

“My last relationship was my first public relationship,” she said. “I don’t know if I’ll ever do it again. At some point, it just gets too hard. People are going to say what they’re going to say, and I really don’t care anymore.”

Schafer also reflected on the frequent transphobic comments she faces online, praising Fike for his acceptance and understanding as her first cisgender boyfriend.

“What was so amazing about my ex-boyfriend was from the get-go, he saw me exactly for who I was, which is amazing,” she said.

Reflecting on her past relationships, Schafer spoke fondly of her first girlfriend, another transgender woman, who helped her understand the importance of being truly seen for who she is. “I’m really thankful that I started out with other trans people,” she explained. “There’s a lens you acquire from being with trans people that helps you see others for who they truly are.”

Schafer and Fike first confirmed their relationship in February 2022 after meeting on the set of Euphoria, where they played love interests. Following their split in summer 2023, Fike told Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe that he’s “done being in relationships right now” as he works on overcoming issues with codependency. However, he expressed hope about working with Schafer again in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, slated to premiere in 2025.

“I think it’ll be fine. We’re all adults, kind of. I’m trying,” Fike remarked.
