Kate Tomas, author, podcast host, and self-described “spiritual mentor,” has spoken out about the “misogynistic” reactions to her relationship with actor Andrew Garfield. In a candid interview with The Sunday Times published on July 21, Tomas expressed her frustration over the public’s focus on her romantic involvement rather than her professional achievements.
Tomas, 42, criticized the tendency to overshadow a woman’s accomplishments with her relationship status. “It’s frustrating that no matter how accomplished or impactful a woman is, it’s always going to be more interesting if they are in a relationship with a man,” she said. “I don’t want to sit under anybody’s shadow.”
Since her relationship with Garfield became public, Tomas has found herself under increased scrutiny, particularly from the paparazzi. She described the invasive nature of their coverage, saying, “They will take maybe 150 pictures, then they choose the four where you look worst.”
Tomas also highlighted the “misogynistic nature” of the interest in her as Garfield’s girlfriend. This attention often results in criticism of her appearance and professional life. She revealed that tabloid reporters have even approached her neighbors, inquiring about her character and personality.
In a strong statement against societal expectations, Tomas, who has a “f— politeness” tattoo to emphasize the importance of women’s safety over pleasing others, responded to the reporters’ inquiries with, “I don’t care.”
The relationship between Garfield and Tomas first made headlines in March 2024 when they were spotted holding hands in Malibu, California, during a double date with Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham. Despite the public interest, representatives for both Garfield and Tomas did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Garfield, known for his private nature regarding his romantic life, was previously linked to model Alyssa Miller from 2021 to 2022 and his Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone in the 2010s. Tomas, as reported by The Sunday Times, recently went through her fourth divorce.
