In a universe where ancient immortals, a 78,000-year-old pig, and Keanu Reeves coexist, Reeves’ new novel, “The Book of Elsewhere,” emerges as a thrilling addition to the literary world. This sci-fi tale, part of the BRZRKR series, showcases Reeves’ storytelling prowess in a fresh and captivating manner.
Collaborating with acclaimed author China Miéville, known for his works such as “The City & The City” and “Perdido Street Station,” Reeves crafts a narrative that delves into the life of an ancient warrior seeking the meaning of life and a way to end his immortal existence. Released today, this novel marks a significant expansion of the BRZRKR universe, originally introduced through a series of graphic novels by Reeves in 2021. These graphic novels garnered enough attention to be adapted into live-action and animated spinoffs by Netflix, with Reeves set to star.
Miéville, discussing the novel with The New York Times, emphasized the unique literary approach they took. “It was important for us to approach it in a new way, in a very literary way, using the novel and the novel form, but at the same time being unabashedly and delightfully a BRZRKR novel and respectful of the original,” he said.
Reeves, reflecting on the creative process, added, “The entertainment world thinks, what else can we do, but I think about it from an artist’s perspective, what else can we do. From the beginning, I wanted other creators and artists to have, as they say in China, play with toys.”
Reeves’ recent ventures span various media forms. Beyond directing and writing for BRZRKR, he continues to shine in the film industry with roles in movies like “John Wick 4” and the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” Moreover, Reeves has reunited with his band, Dogstar, which plans to tour North America in the fall of 2024.
“The Book of Elsewhere” not only reinforces Reeves’ versatility as an artist but also promises to captivate readers with its blend of sci-fi elements and profound existential questions.
