Jack Russell, the founding member and iconic lead vocalist of the rock band Great White, has announced his retirement from touring, bringing an end to a remarkable career that has spanned decades.
In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday, Russell revealed the reasons behind his decision. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I must announce my retirement from the road,” he stated. “After a recent diagnosis of Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy in May 2024, I am unable to perform at the level I desire and at the level you deserve. Words cannot express my gratitude for the many years of memories, love, and support. Thank you for letting me live my dreams.”
This announcement coincides with the release of Russell’s autobiography, The True Tale of Mista Bone: A Rock & Roll Narrative, co-written with K.L. Doty. The book offers an intimate look at Russell’s life and career, providing fans with a deeper understanding of his journey in the music industry.
Russell first gained widespread recognition as the lead vocalist for Great White, a band that achieved multiplatinum success in the late 1980s. Known for hit singles such as “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and “The Angel Song,” Great White quickly rose to prominence and cemented its place in rock history.
Since 2011, Russell has been performing under the name Jack Russell’s Great White, continuing to captivate audiences at various events, including Bandera, Texas’ Ground Zero Musicfest at Mansfield Park and The Sands Rocks, a Gen X festival held in Cancun, Mexico, last November. Managed by John Domagall of Artist Representation & Management Inc., Russell’s version of the band has maintained a strong presence in the live music scene.
Jack Russell’s Great White has shared the stage with notable artists like Lita Ford, Dokken, and Bret Michaels. One of the band’s standout performances was in 2017 at the Cultura Event Center in Tacoma, Washington, where they grossed $32,710 from 841 tickets sold, according to Pollstar Boxoffice.
Russell’s retirement marks the end of an era for his fans and the music community. His contributions to rock music and his dynamic stage presence will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
