Pop sensation Taylor Swift made a notable decision this year, opting to perform in Amsterdam over her traditional 4th of July celebrations in Rhode Island. The 34-year-old artist took the stage at Johan Cruijff Arena, marking a significant change from her usual Independence Day festivities.
Swift’s Amsterdam performance is part of a three-show engagement at the arena, continuing through Saturday, July 6. Historically, Swift has hosted a lavish Independence Day party at her home in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Last year, she shared highlights from the event on Instagram, posting, “Happy belated Independence Day from your local neighbourhood independent girlies,” with longtime friend Selena Gomez in attendance.
Before 2017, Swift’s annual “Taymerica” parties were a staple of her summer calendar. However, she halted these celebrations following the 2016 presidential election, citing a period of personal disillusionment. In a candid interview with The Guardian in August 2019, Swift explained her reasons for stepping back, revealing how the political climate and public criticism influenced her decision.
“You know, the summer before that [2016] election, all people were saying was, ‘She’s calculated. She’s manipulative. She’s not what she seems. She’s a snake. She’s a liar,’” Swift recalled. These same insults were hurled at then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, leading Swift to question whether her presence would be seen as an endorsement or a liability.
Reflecting on the backlash, Swift added, “Literally, millions of people were telling me to disappear. So I disappeared. In many senses.”
This year’s performance in Amsterdam, where Swift debuted her new song “Clara Bow” with a special nod to concert-goer Stevie, underscores her commitment to her music and fans, even at the expense of long-held traditions.
