Billie Eilish has changed her hair more times than we can count—green, blue, blonde, black, red—but one color combo truly made her feel like herself.
In a brand-new interview for British Vogue, the 23-year-old pop star opened up about her bold style choices, her favorite hair moments, and even the fashion looks she regrets (kind of).
Talking with actor Colman Domingo, Billie was asked which of her many hair colors stood out as her favorite.
“Green and black—definitely,” Billie said with a smile. “I really like to romanticize two specific periods in my life: the green roots and the red roots. But the green and black especially felt like me. I felt so exactly who I was at that time.”
She added, “I’d never really seen anything like that before, and it felt really nice to have something that felt like mine. That shade of green was my color for so long. I loved it so much. Hair, nails, clothes—it was such a magical period. It was so intense. I felt like I was becoming who I am.”
And if that look had a name? Billie joked to Nicki Minaj during the chat, “I’d call it The Billie.”
Later in the interview, Chioma Nnadi, British Vogue’s head of editorial content, asked Billie about any fashion choices from her past that made her cringe. Billie laughed and admitted she’s had her share of strange outfits—but she always went all in.
“I do have to give myself credit for always going so hard,” she said. “I wore like actual bouncy balls with straps on the bottom of my shoes once… But again, I committed to the bit. And I regret nothing.”
Billie’s hair has always been part of her identity, and sometimes the changes weren’t easy. In 2021, she shocked fans when she traded in her green-and-black hair for platinum blonde, just in time for her Met Gala debut and the release of her jazzier album Happier Than Ever.
But in an interview with Rolling Stone, she revealed the blonde era wasn’t all fun and glam.
“And then I dyed my hair blond and I immediately was like, ‘Oh, I have no idea who I am,’” she shared.
Even her brother and music partner, Finneas, noticed the shift. “It was like being in a tornado cellar, reading a cute little story,” he said. “It was a coping mechanism of an album.”
Eventually, Billie went back to dark hair, but even her brunette phase didn’t feel totally right.
“I look back at that and I’m like, ‘Who is this brunette?’” she laughed. “A brunette! That wasn’t me.”
Now, Billie’s back to rocking a darker style—most recently seen in January 2025 with her jet-black hair—and it’s clear she’s found her rhythm again. Whether it’s music, fashion, or hair color, Billie Eilish is always evolving, but some looks just feel like home.
And for Billie, nothing says home like that bold green and black.
