Green Day Sets Coachella Stage On Fire — Literally! A Palm Tree Caught Fire During Their Epic Set

by Coco

Green Day turned up the heat at Coachella 2025 — and we’re not just talking about their music.

During their big headlining show on Saturday, April 12, at the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, one of the band’s fireworks launched into the sky and accidentally hit a palm tree. The result? Flames shot up in the artist section near the stage, and a palm tree actually caught fire!

Security and fire crews moved quickly to put out the fire, and luckily, no one was hurt. But fans couldn’t stop talking about it online. “Green Day is LITERALLY fire,” one person posted on X (formerly Twitter).

This was a huge night for Green Day. Even though frontman Billie Joe Armstrong had performed at Coachella before — first in 2014 with The Replacements and again just a day earlier on Friday with the Go-Go’s — this was the first time the full band took the main stage at the famous festival.

And wow, did they make it count!

Fans rocked out to classics like Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday, and of course, American Idiot. They also performed songs from their newest album, Saviors.

Tré Cool, Mike Dirnt, and Billie Joe Armstrong brought full punk energy and got the crowd jumping from start to finish.

This year also marks 20 years since Green Day released American Idiot, the game-changing album that shot them back into the spotlight in 2004. To celebrate, the band released a deluxe edition of the album last October, packed with rare demos, live performances, and even a 110-minute documentary called 20 Years of American Idiot.

The album gave us hits like Boulevard of Broken Dreams and American Idiot, and earned the band their first seven Grammy nominations!

And the fun didn’t start at Coachella. Just a year ago, in April 2024, Green Day was honored at the iHeartRadio Music Awards with the Landmark Award. They wowed the crowd with a mix of old and new songs, starting with Bobby Sox from Saviors, and then rocking out to their 1994 smash Basket Case from their breakthrough album Dookie.

This year’s Coachella is shaping up to be one for the books. The festival runs across two weekends — April 11-13 and April 18-20 — and features headliners like Lady Gaga, Post Malone, and Travis Scott.

The lineup also includes huge names like Missy Elliott, Charli XCX, Megan Thee Stallion, Ed Sheeran, Weezer, T-Pain, Tyla, and even solo performances from BLACKPINK stars Lisa and Jennie.

And let’s not forget rising stars like Benson Boone and indie favorites like FKA twigs, The Marías, and Jimmy Eat World.

With fireworks, palm trees catching fire, and legendary bands rocking the stage, Coachella 2025 is officially on fire — and Green Day just made history in the hottest way possible.
