Johnny Tillotson, the renowned singer behind the 1960s hit “Poetry in Motion,” has passed away at the age of 86. His wife, Nancy, confirmed the news on social media, revealing that he died on April 1 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.
In a heartfelt tribute, Nancy described Tillotson as the “sweetest, kindest man” she ever met. She praised his humor, generosity, and kindness, noting that he cherished his fans, who made his dreams a reality. Tillotson is survived by Nancy, his stepdaughter Genevieve, his grandchildren, and other family members.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Tillotson began performing at a young age and studied journalism at the University of Florida. His music career took off after winning the National Pet Milk Talent Contest, which led to a record deal with Cadence Records.
Tillotson is best known for his hit song “Poetry in Motion,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also had success with songs like “Talk Back Trembling Lips,” “You Can Never Stop Me Loving You,” and “It Keeps Right on A-Hurtin’,” which was covered by Elvis Presley and other notable artists. Tillotson received two Grammy nominations during his career.
Just days before his passing, Tillotson released a new song titled “Everything I Touch Turns to Blue.” His legacy as a talented singer-songwriter will be remembered for generations to come.
