Baylee Littrell, the son of Backstreet Boys’ Brian Littrell, captivated viewers on Monday night’s episode of American Idol with an emotional performance about his faith journey.
The 22-year-old singer performed an original song, “Hey Jesus,” which he wrote during a challenging time following the loss of his beloved grandmother.
“My grandma was my best friend,” Littrell shared in a heartfelt video before his performance. “She understood me like not many people do.” After her passing, Littrell said he struggled with his faith, feeling lost and questioning everything.
But writing “Hey Jesus” allowed Littrell to reconnect with his spirituality. The song’s lyrics reflect this reconnection: “Hey Jesus, I broke my wings again. Can you help me up, one last time, old friend?”
The poignant performance moved his parents, Brian and Leighanne Littrell, who were shown in the audience with tears in their eyes, silently singing along.
Judges were quick to praise Littrell’s heartfelt performance. Carrie Underwood called it “so good” and described his delivery as genuine, while Lionel Richie complimented the song’s “great lyrics.”
Littrell’s performance earned him a spot in the next round, as over half of the contestants were eliminated during “Hollywood Week.”
Baylee Littrell isn’t the only famous offspring in this season’s American Idol. Lola Bonfiglio, daughter of Carnie Wilson from Wilson Phillips, also competed but was sent home Monday night after facing online criticism over accusations of being a “nepo baby.”
