Lady Gaga is facing a trademark infringement lawsuit from California surf and lifestyle company Lost International, who claims the pop superstar’s Mayhem merch design is strikingly similar to their own logo.
The brand, which has been using the “Mayhem” trademark since the 1980s, alleges that Gaga’s merchandise, including hoodies and T-shirts, is “nearly identical” to the logo they have owned since 2015.
The lawsuit, filed in a California district court on March 25, accuses Lady Gaga of misleading the public into thinking her Mayhem collection is linked to Lost International. The company argues that Gaga’s use of the logo could damage their brand, as fans might assume her merchandise is authorized or endorsed by them.
“Lady Gaga’s Mayhem album soared to No. 1 and broke records, cementing her place as one of the world’s most iconic artists,” says Gaga’s lawyer, Orin Snyder. “Now, some opportunistic party is trying to take advantage of her success with this baseless lawsuit. This is nothing more than a meritless attempt to exploit the legal system.”
Lost International’s complaint highlights their longstanding use of the Mayhem trademark on surfboards, apparel, and accessories since the ‘80s. The company claims that Gaga’s new designs, which were released alongside her Mayhem album, mirror their logo so closely that it’s likely to confuse the public.
Gaga’s team reportedly received a cease-and-desist letter from Lost International, but the complaint states that it went unacknowledged. Lost is now seeking a trial by jury, along with damages for the alleged trademark infringement.
The legal clash comes just as Lady Gaga’s album Mayhem made waves by debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. She’s also gearing up for her Mayhem Ball tour, which kicks off this summer with dates across Europe and North America.
