Chappell Roan is opening up about her transformation in personal style as she continues to rise in the limelight.
In a revealing interview on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast, released on March 26, the 27-year-old singer, best known for her hit “Giver,” shared how her approach to fashion has shifted since she became a public figure. Roan explained that while she embraces a more modest look these days, her style was once much bolder and more daring.
“I’m very modest with my day-to-day style now,” Roan said. “Being in L.A., I feel more comfortable dressing in a masculine way without getting negative attention. But in other places, I dress more feminine. I just don’t want to deal with comments from people.”
Cooper chimed in, acknowledging that sometimes blending in can be a much-needed reprieve from the scrutiny that comes with fame. Roan went on to recall her earlier days before her rise to stardom, when she used to dress in bold, boundary-pushing outfits that would turn heads.
“Before fame hit, I used to dress absolutely crazy. I’d wear a thong out, mini skirts with my bottom cheeks hanging out, see-through tops… I was going for the full bimbo vibe,” Roan admitted. “I even wore silicone boob inserts to push my chest up to my clavicle. But as time went on, it all felt like work, and I lost my shine. I was just tired.”
Roan further explained that she used to spend hours doing her makeup in her room, livestreaming the process on TikTok. She described her maximalist look, full of drag-inspired makeup and 70s disco glam, as “amazing” at first, but eventually, the lack of separation between her onstage persona and real self became overwhelming. “I’d be out as Kayleigh in that look, and then I’d be Chappell on stage. It just started blending together.”
Despite the dramatic change in her style, Roan’s bold fashion choices are still an integral part of her identity as a pop star. Since the release of her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, which earned her three Grammy nominations and one win for Best New Artist, her distinctive looks and stage outfits have become as iconic as her music.
She also shared behind-the-scenes details of her extravagant performances, including the green body paint she wore during her Statue of Liberty-inspired look at the 2024 Governors Ball. The painstaking process of applying and removing the paint left a lasting impression — literally. “I had to spread my cheeks to get sprayed with green paint, and then it took three baths with dish soap to get it all off,” she recalled.
Chappell Roan’s daring fashion moments continue to captivate audiences, as she recently dazzled at Paris Fashion Week with multiple avant-garde outfits. Whether at the Grammys in a stunning Jean Paul Gaultier gown or rocking a medieval-inspired look for her performance, Roan’s bold, evolving style keeps fans talking.
