Michael Shannon is known for his powerful on-screen performances, but recently, the Oscar-nominated actor has taken his love for music to the stage in a surprising way: with an R.E.M. cover band! Despite being an actor, Shannon has been passionately touring with musician Jason Narducy, celebrating R.E.M.’s iconic albums—proving that his fandom for the band runs deep.
While many actors might dream of moonlighting as rock stars, Shannon has some strong opinions on the matter. In a recent interview with The Bitter Southerner, he admitted, “I’m not a fan of actors having rock and roll bands,” calling the whole idea “greedy.” But, when it comes to his own R.E.M. project, he doesn’t mince words, describing his performances as “glorified karaoke.”
So, what’s Shannon’s take on karaoke? He sees it as both ridiculous and beautiful. “On one hand, it’s embarrassing. On the other, it allows anyone to go up and sing a song they love with passion,” he explained, offering insight into why he enjoys performing R.E.M. hits.
Shannon’s R.E.M. journey started in July 2023 when he and Narducy celebrated the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s debut album, Murmur, with a full performance in Chicago. The show was a hit, leading to a brief tour. The duo followed up with another successful celebration in early 2024, this time performing Fables of the Reconstruction, and they’re gearing up for a UK tour in August.
Despite his love for R.E.M., Shannon has no desire to be in a traditional cover band. “I don’t aspire to be in a cover band; this is just so damn fun,” said Narducy. “It’s more like a celebration band.” The pair has plans for another performance next year, marking the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s Life Rich Pageant album.
For Shannon, it’s not about stepping into the shoes of a rock star or imitating R.E.M.’s frontman Michael Stipe—it’s about honoring the music. “I’m not trying to be a rock star. I’m just singing a song that I love to the best of my capabilities,” he said.
The legendary band R.E.M. may have officially split in 2011, but their influence remains alive and well, thanks in part to Shannon’s tribute performances. With the upcoming UK dates and more to come, it’s clear that his love for R.E.M. will keep rocking long after the curtain falls.
