Kanye West has dropped a new song, “Lonely Roads Still Go to Sunshine,” which features his 11-year-old daughter North and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. The 47-year-old rapper released the track on March 15 via a post on X, sparking headlines due to its family ties and a legal battle with his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian.
The track also includes contributions from Diddy, 55, and West’s 26-year-old son King, alongside new Yeezy artist Jasmine Williams. The song opens with an emotional phone conversation between West and Combs, where Combs expresses gratitude for West taking care of his children, saying, “Ain’t nobody reach out to them, ain’t nobody call them.” West responds, “You raised me. Even when I ain’t know you, know what I’m saying?”
Notably, North raps a line, “When you see me shining, then you see the light,” marking her first recorded appearance on a track with her famous father. However, the song’s release was met with backlash from Kardashian, who allegedly attempted to block it by filing a trademark on their daughter’s name.
According to leaked text messages shared by West, Kardashian, 44, stated that she had trademarked North’s name to prevent her from being part of the song, claiming it was part of a prior agreement with West to protect their children’s identities. West, visibly upset in his texts, responded aggressively, stating, “Amend it or I’m going to war,” and threatening that the public fallout would be devastating for both of them.
Kardashian’s legal intervention stems from her belief that she was protecting their children’s interests, but West’s reaction suggests ongoing tensions between the ex-couple over both personal and professional matters. The drama also ties into West’s history of controversial statements, including his vocal defense of Combs, who is currently facing serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.
