Ed Sheeran delighted fans in New Orleans with a surprise pop-up performance on March 15, unveiling his new single “Azizam” for the very first time. The 34-year-old Grammy-winning artist appeared in the historic French Quarter, stepping out of a black SUV in a casual tie-dye tee and blue pants, with a portable amp and microphone in hand.
The crowd, unaware of the special performance ahead, was soon joined by The Soul Rebels brass band, known for their recent collaboration with Kendrick Lamar during the Super Bowl halftime show. Together, they accompanied Sheeran as he sang “Azizam,” marking the first live performance of the track.
Sheeran took a moment to share the exciting news with the crowd, announcing, “We’re gonna do one song here – we’re filming a bit of content – and then we’re going to do a parade and walk down and play some songs, if you want to come with us.” He added, “I’ve got a new song coming in a couple of weeks that no one’s heard. This will be the first time it’s ever been played live.”
A video from the impromptu performance was shared on Sheeran’s Instagram, capturing the moment as he rolled his amp through the narrow streets, joined by an enthusiastic crowd. In his caption, Sheeran expressed gratitude to those who showed up, writing, “Playing some new music today on the streets of New Orleans with @thesoulrebels thanks to everyone who turned up!”
This surprise performance in New Orleans comes just days after Sheeran stunned Nashville fans with an impromptu set at Tootsie’s bar, where he performed a mix of his hits and unexpected covers, including Britney Spears‘ “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”
Sheeran is set to release his eighth studio album, Play, later this year, following the success of his 2023 album Autumn Variations.
