US singer Teddy Swims made a surprise visit to Tamworth, Staffordshire, on Tuesday, and the question on everyone’s mind was: What does a star like him eat when visiting a TikTok sensation’s famous potato van?
For Teddy, it was a no-brainer. “I had all of them, everything they’ve got back there—the chili, the cheese, the slaw, the curry,” he shared, diving right in to the Spudman experience.
Hundreds of excited fans flocked to Ben Newman’s food van, known as Spudman, in St Editha’s Square, where the singer served up free potatoes to the crowd and signed autographs from inside the van.
Teddy, looking relaxed in a black apron over a camel-colored top, grinned at the camera while holding wooden cutlery in one hand as he enjoyed his loaded potato.
The visit came after Teddy’s team reached out to Ben, aka Spudman, after the US star spotted Ben’s viral TikTok videos. “Apparently he’s a fan, and he was like, ‘Let’s go and see Spudman.’ We’ve been trying to make it happen since his last tour,” Ben said. “They rang me at Christmas and said, ‘We’re coming back,’ and we finally managed to get it to work. It’s amazing, I can’t believe it’s happening.”
Teddy’s visit coincided with his two shows at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, where he’s been performing to adoring fans. Speaking with BBC Radio WM, Teddy expressed his love for the West Midlands: “It’s my favorite city, my favorite place to be. The people are so sweet, and it reminds me of home in Georgia. I always say this is like the rednecks of the UK,” he laughed.
Meanwhile, Ben, who’d been up since 4:00 AM preparing for the visit, was equally excited. “Teddy’s come to us today, and we’re going to him this evening. I get to go to his gig in Birmingham and hopefully hang out with him,” he added.
From the street vendor van to the stage, it seems like Teddy Swims and Spudman are two stars shining bright in Tamworth!
