Paul McCartney made a memorable return to Studio 8H during the SNL 50: The Anniversary Special on Sunday, February 16. The 82-year-old Beatles legend, fresh from a surprise gig at Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan, took the stage to perform timeless Beatles classics.
McCartney exclusively played songs from Abbey Road, starting with a dreamy rendition of “Golden Slumbers,” before transitioning into the moving ballad “Carry That Weight.” The audience stood and clapped along when McCartney closed his set with “The End,” delivering the iconic line, “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”
The star-studded anniversary episode also featured appearances by Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and a host of celebrities, including Adam Driver, Dave Chappelle, and Kim Kardashian. McCartney, who has appeared on SNL multiple times over the years, was also part of the show’s 40th anniversary special in 2015.
In a lighthearted moment, Bill Murray, Dana Carvey, and Alan Cumming humorously impersonated McCartney in various SNL sketches, proving that even a rock icon can’t escape cheeky parodies.
The special aired on NBC and is available for streaming on Peacock.
