In a heartfelt move, The Weeknd has announced he is canceling his upcoming Rose Bowl concert and postponing the release of his highly anticipated album Hurry Up Tomorrow, out of respect for those affected by the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.
The “Blinding Lights” hitmaker, Abel Tesfaye, 34, shared the news with his fans on Instagram on January 13, expressing his concern for the people of L.A. amid the deadly fires that have ravaged parts of the city.
“Out of respect and concern for the people of Los Angeles County, I am canceling the Rose Bowl concert originally scheduled for January 25th,” the singer wrote. “This city has always been a profound source of inspiration for me, and my thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time.”
In addition to the concert cancellation, The Weeknd made the decision to push back the release of his new album Hurry Up Tomorrow to January 31st. “My focus remains on supporting the recovery of these communities and aiding its incredible people as they rebuild,” he added, signing the post “With love, Abel.”
The fire crisis has had a massive impact on L.A., with at least 24 lives lost and many others still missing. The Rose Bowl stadium, which was set to host The Weeknd’s concert, has also been transformed into an emergency response center for fire personnel.
Ticketmaster has confirmed that refunds for the canceled show will be issued to customers.
As the city struggles to recover, The Weeknd’s gesture of solidarity is being widely praised by fans and locals alike. Stay tuned for updates on his new album, and let’s all continue to support L.A. through this difficult time.
