At 65, Flavor Flav is showing no signs of slowing down—whether it’s keeping up with the latest holiday trends or reflecting on the year that was. The rapper, known for his energetic “Shake Your Booty” anthems, took a moment to chat exclusively with PEOPLE during the 2024 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Inglewood, California, on Friday, December 6. And if you think Flavor Flav’s life is all about rap and wild antics, think again—his 2024 has been marked by profound moments, especially his unforgettable time at the Paris Summer Olympics.
Speaking with warmth and gratitude, Flav shared that attending the Paris Olympics was the “highlight” of his year. “Watching my water polo team do their thing… watching Jordan Chiles and Simone Biles win their medals… being at the rugby game and seeing the girls’ rugby team snag their bronze medals—it was just incredible,” Flav reminisced. His eyes lit up as he recalled witnessing these champions in action, adding, “Just being there, in that moment, was the greatest thing ever.”
Flav, a longtime advocate for women’s sports, had even more reasons to celebrate during the Olympics. He proudly sponsored the U.S. women’s water polo team, and his connection with the athletes runs deep. Notably, water polo stars Ashleigh Johnson and Maggie Steffens gifted him a special Paris Olympic-themed clock. “They gifted me this wonderful clock right here, and honestly, I’m still in shock,” Flav revealed with a smile that spoke volumes about his admiration for the team.
As he looked at the clock, Flav became visibly emotional. “They mean the world to me, you know what I’m saying? Not just those two, but the whole water polo team,” he added. “They did their thing this year, and I’m proud of them.” His bond with the athletes is more than just professional—it’s a family-like connection that grows every time they meet. “Every time I see them, it’s like a family reunion. I’m happy to see my family,” he said.
Flav’s decision to sponsor the water polo team came after learning that they were in need of support, a cause he felt compelled to champion. “A lot of women just want a chance, to feel like they got a shot,” Flav explained in an earlier interview with PEOPLE in May. “I wanted to help out, give women that chance they deserve.”
But the rapper’s generosity doesn’t stop at sponsorship. During a heartfelt appearance on CBS Morning in July with Maggie Steffens, Flav shocked the water polo team with an incredible offer: a Virgin Voyage cruise and a $1,000 bonus for every team member. Steffens was visibly moved, responding with an enthusiastic “That’s amazing!” as she beamed with joy.
Flav emphasized the hard work and dedication of the women’s water polo team, saying, “They’re out there bustin’ their butt to make the United States look good. They’re chasing their dreams.” His words reflect a deep respect for the athletes and their commitment.
As the holidays approach, Flav is already looking forward to what promises to be a festive season. “Honestly, it looks like… oh man, it looks crazy,” he said with a laugh. “A lot of good things are gonna happen. A lot of gifts, a lot of family, and a lot of food.” The star’s love for his family and friends is apparent as he anticipates a Christmas filled with love, laughter, and plenty of cheer.
From Paris to the holidays, it’s clear that Flavor Flav’s heart is full of joy—and he’s sharing that joy with the world.
