Miley Cyrus is gearing up to unveil her ninth studio album, tentatively titled Something Beautiful, and she’s spilling the details on the inspirations behind this exciting new project. In a revealing interview for Harper’s BAZAAR’s Art Issue, published on November 20, the 31-year-old singer-songwriter shared that the concept album will focus on themes of healing and feature visually stunning elements.
Cyrus, who has been hard at work in the studio for the past six to seven months, cited Pink Floyd’s iconic film The Wall as a primary influence for her upcoming album. She reminisced about the first time she watched the 1982 surrealist film with a friend and her brother, recalling how they fully embraced the rockstar aesthetic of the era. “We really leaned in, employing a limo, weed, and fur coats à la ‘70s rockers,” she said, expressing her deep emotional connection to the film. “My idea was making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.”
In addition to The Wall, Cyrus drew inspiration from the visually striking horror film Mandy, which stars Nicolas Cage as he seeks vengeance for his girlfriend’s death. This film has had such a profound impact on her that she even named one of her dogs after its titular character. Initially, Cyrus envisioned creating a musical adaptation of Mandy, stating, “I wanted to play Nicolas Cage. I love that it’s a romance revenge story. Romance and revenge — those are some of the greatest tragedies.”
While her musical interpretation of Mandy didn’t materialize, director Panos Cosmatos has remained closely involved in the production of Something Beautiful. Cyrus described the album as “hypnotizing” and “glamorous,” emphasizing that it aims to address what she perceives as a “sick culture” through music. “It was important for me that every song has these healing sound properties,” she explained. “The songs, whether they’re about destruction or heartbreak or death, are presented beautifully because even in our darkest times, there is beauty to be found.”
Cyrus also expressed her desire to be a transformative force in her listeners’ lives. “I would like to be a human psychedelic for people,” she stated, clarifying that she doesn’t want anyone to imitate her but rather hopes to elevate their experiences through her music. “I want to impact frequencies in your body that make you vibrate at a different level,” she added.
As fans eagerly await Something Beautiful, it’s clear that Miley Cyrus is not only reinventing herself but also aiming to create an album that resonates deeply with listeners on multiple levels.
