Riley Keough has dismissed the notion of a “Presley family curse,” attributing the tragedies that have affected her family to a series of common, albeit unfortunate, events rather than any supernatural misfortune. Speaking at the Los Angeles stop of her book tour for *From Here to the Great Unknown*, a memoir completed after the sudden death of her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, Keough addressed questions surrounding the family’s perceived misfortunes.
During the event on November 18, Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley, responded to inquiries about how she managed to avoid the so-called curse. She expressed her discomfort with the term, explaining that it implies a mythological narrative rather than acknowledging real issues such as addiction. “Everyone in here has loved somebody with addiction issues or has lost somebody tragically,” she noted, emphasizing her hope that future generations of her family will not face similar struggles.
The concept of a “curse” refers to a history of tragedies within the Presley family, including the stillbirth of Elvis’ twin brother, Jessie, and the suicide of Keough’s brother, Benjamin Presley, in 2020. Following Lisa Marie’s death in January 2023 and a legal dispute with her grandmother Priscilla Presley over inheritance matters, Keough became the sole heir to Graceland, which Elvis had gifted to Lisa Marie.
When asked about her new responsibilities regarding Graceland, Keough described the experience as “fun,” clarifying that she had been involved in managing the estate long before her mother’s passing. “I was very involved in it already,” she explained, adding that her mother often sought her opinions on estate matters.
Keough’s involvement with Graceland began in her twenties, and she acknowledged that there had always been an understanding that she would eventually manage the estate. “There was that awareness and it was something that I was familiar with,” she said.
As she continues to navigate her role as steward of her family’s legacy, Keough aims to honor her mother’s and grandmother’s efforts in preserving their iconic home.
