In a rare convergence of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, Harrisburg welcomed Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen, and Robert De Niro just hours before a historic presidential election in one of the nation’s most pivotal battleground states.
“This is it,” Waterston proclaimed. “This is the moment of decision. And doesn’t it feel good to be in this place at this time where the whole thing is getting decided?”
For the couple hundred supporters of Kamala Harris gathered at a union hall, the presence of Hollywood royalty was electrifying. Martin Sheen even serenaded the crowd, while he, Waterston, and De Niro echoed their endorsements for Harris and expressed their disdain for the opposing candidate.
“We’ve got two candidates on the ballot for president: one who belongs in the Oval Office, and one who can’t be left anywhere near it,” said De Niro. “One candidate is only in it for himself, and one is in it only for us.”
Their appearance raised questions about whether Hollywood stars can sway voters in Harrisburg. Why, some wondered, should Pennsylvanians care about the political opinions of the rich and famous?
For Sheen, the answer was clear. “No matter where you’re from, you’re responsible for projecting the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth all the time,” he said. “When you get in this arena, acting is what we do for a living. Activism is what we do to stay alive.”
Governor Josh Shapiro welcomed the actors’ advocacy. “I’m grateful that they’re here,” Shapiro said. Acknowledging the impact of their influence, he added, “They could live in their own worlds, free from some of the big challenges facing America. But they’re here to urge people to vote, and we appreciate their activism.”
In the final push before the polls, the hope is that these high-profile voices might inspire more Pennsylvanians to participate in the election. After all, when the nation watches Pennsylvania, it’s a reminder that every vote has the potential to shape the country’s future.
