Chris Martin’s recent concert in Melbourne took a dramatic turn when the Coldplay frontman unexpectedly fell through a trap door during the final moments of the band’s fourth show at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, November 3. The 47-year-old singer, known for his high-energy performances, was sharing anecdotes from Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour with the audience when he walked backward down a raised runway—straight into an open trap door on stage.
Fans in the packed stadium gasped as Martin disappeared through the trap door, and nearby crew members quickly came to his aid. A fan who caught the fall on video shared it on X (formerly Twitter), captioning it, “The moment Chris Martin fell through a trap door right in front of me at the #Coldplay concert tonight.”
Unfazed and with his usual charm, Martin emerged from the fall with a laugh, telling the crowd, “That’s not planned!” and quipping, “Holy s—, that was nearly a YouTube moment!” He then thanked a crew member for catching him, turning the unexpected slip into a memorable, lighthearted moment.
Since its launch in March 2022, Coldplay’s record-breaking tour has become known for spontaneous moments and celebrity appearances. Special guests from across the music world, like Maggie Rogers, Shawn Mendes, and even Michael J. Fox, have joined the band on stage, making every show a unique experience. Martin himself has made headlines with impromptu street performances, including a memorable moment on Grafton Street in Dublin this past August. In this pop-up show, Martin was joined by Nigerian singer Burna Boy, English rapper Little Simz, Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna, and Argentine star Tini, whom he collaborated with for the song “WE PRAY.” Coldplay shared a video of the gathering, captioning it, “Magic moment with @burnaboygram, @littlesimz, @elyanna, @tinistoessel. Thanks to everyone who showed up, and to TikTok for helping to make it happen.”
Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour is scheduled to continue until September 2025, wrapping up with a 10-day run at London’s Wembley Stadium. In the coming weeks, Martin and his bandmates—guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion—will finish up the Australian leg of their tour with shows in Sydney before heading to New Zealand.
The tour’s success also coincides with Coldplay’s release of their 10th studio album, Moon Music, and the single “feelslikeimfallinginlove.” Despite the band’s ongoing projects, Martin recently revealed in an exclusive interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that Coldplay has plans for only two more “proper albums.” “We are only going to do 12 proper albums, and that’s real,” Martin explained, hinting that any future releases would likely take the form of side projects or compilations of unreleased material.
For fans of Coldplay, Martin’s Melbourne mishap is yet another memorable chapter in the band’s vibrant touring history. Coldplay remains at the top of their game, balancing stadium-filling performances, new music, and, occasionally, unplanned stumbles that keep fans buzzing long after the lights dim.
