Laraine Newman, an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, recently shared an emotional memory about her daughter, Hannah Einbinder, who expressed a desire to become an actor. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at The Groundlings’ 50th Anniversary Alumni Reunion on October 19, Newman, 72, recounted her pride in Einbinder’s comedic rise.
Newman revealed that Einbinder, 29, initially pursued sports and broadcast journalism at Chapman University before discovering her passion for acting. “Kids were saying, ‘You’re funny, why don’t you join the improv group?’ That’s when she tearfully admitted to me, like a dirty secret, ‘I want to be an actor,'” Newman said.
Despite acknowledging that her daughter was somewhat late to the acting scene, Newman emphasized Einbinder’s remarkable talent, stating she had the potential to excel “right away.” However, as a mother, Newman has chosen to take a step back from influencing her daughter’s career. “Children perceive unsolicited advice as criticism,” she explained. “When I try to give advice, I often end up feeling hurt, so I just refrain from getting involved.”
Newman has previously expressed concerns about Einbinder’s debut in the critically acclaimed series Hacks, which has earned her three Primetime Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations. “It’s thrilling! Everyone on that show is great, and Hannah has risen to the occasion,” Newman remarked. “She had no acting experience, and as a mother, I was worried, but I didn’t need to be.”
Praising her daughter’s instincts and comedic timing, Newman noted, “She even contributes jokes, which is what got her the job.” Reflecting on Einbinder’s childhood, Newman recalled moments that hinted at her daughter’s writing talent. “I remember doing homework with her, and she would write these boring sentences but then come up with something brilliant. I’d think, ‘Why are you holding out on me?'”
Newman concluded, “It’s thrilling to see her shine.”
